What is Gold Filled?
As a jewelry designer, I often get questions from customers who want to better understand the jewelry they are purchasing. I love it when this happens!
There was a time when I was one of those people. I didn't understand some of the terminology that was used in the jewelry industry. I believe that when we are more knowledgeable, we make smarter purchases.
So I am starting a Frequently Asked Questions series! For the next few weeks, I'll be answering the questions I am asked the most and my hope is that it equips you to put your hard-earned money into jewelry that you will love for years to come!
What is Gold Filled?
Plated gold jewelry is "dipped" in a very thin layer of gold (which wears away over time). Gold filled jewelry however is made by bonding a thick layer of gold to a base core (typically brass). This very thick layer of gold does a great job of preventing tarnish. Though not typical, with rough handling and/or body chemistry changes, tarnishing is possible so proper care is recommended to keep your gold filled jewelry looking its best.
Gold filled jewelry offers a great alternative to solid gold and looks just as beautiful!
